OT; Okay, let's wrap this thing up!
No spoiler space, since I won't be talking about Tuesday's ep.
Okay, time for me to weigh in on this overheated matter. And I have to agree
with Tony McD and several others and say, who cares? The debate over whether
Willow is gay or straight or bi or does strange things with cucumbers makes
as much sense as debating whether Willow is Jewish or Wiccan; we see her
casting spells and participating in meetings with other self-professed
wiccans, but at the same time she placed a stone on Tara's grave a couple of
weeks ago, in accordance with Jewish custom.
The main problem over speculating whether she's gay or not is simply the fact
that I don't think Joss and Co. know themselves. After last season, I wonder
if they really know most of their main characters.
I think that a lot of the complaints about Buffy in the last couple of
seasons stem from the simple fact that Buffy and her friends have grown up,
and the simpler times of high school are over. The fact is that they can't
go back to the relatively calm and safe harbor of childhood. Adolescence,
with its shifting peer pressures and physical demands, is long gone for them.
I have no doubt that Willow was genuinely crushing over Xander, or that she
truly loved Oz. The fact that she later chose Tara doesn't cheapen her past
experiences. She chose one person over another. That's not about being gay
or bi or whatever, it's about her being in love with a person.
'Wiccan', 'Bi', 'Lesbian', these are all labels. Before she was any of these
things, she was Willow. Remember that.
