I agree, there could be more realism in some fics. But you have to
remember that these fics are already an escape from an unpleasant
"reality" (the stifling of the romance onscreen), so there's bound to be
some "rose-colored glasses" writing involved.

Also, the wider world is usually the **tertiary** anxiety in fics.
First is dealing with the other person, then your friends and only then
the Harmonys of the world. It's not surprising that most fics focus on
"Will Buffy love me?" and "how do we tell Xander/Giles/my mom" etc, and
don't get all the way to dealing with public image/pressure, etc..

That said, there certainly is an opportunity for those sort of fics and
I'd love for someone (say, you?) to write them.
