Wouldn't it be nice if Spike **had** cast a love spell on Buffy? It's
not like he hasn't had this thought before?he was going to try it on
Dru in "Lovers Walk". 

Maybe after Dru came back in "Crush", he was certain that he wanted
Buffy and not her. Maybe his decision to got to Warren for the Buffybot
("I Was Made to Love You") wasn't just to have a sex toy, but he wanted
a talisman for the spell he was casting on Buffy?a life-sized voodoo
doll, if you will.

Maybe his despair at the end of "Intervention" wasn't merely over
getting tortured by Glory, but that the spell hadn't seemed to work.
Maybe his surprise when Buffy kisses him is both because he realizes
that she's really Buffy and not the 'bot?and also because he realizes
that the spell is starting to work.

We know that it is possible to instill a trace of a human spirit in a
robot (see Warrenbot in "Villains"), so why not use a mystically charged
robot as a means to enspell a human spirit?

Maybe Spike's disgust with the Buffybot in "Bargaining, Part 1" was
because he had never wanted her?all along, she'd been a means to an
end, but that end had taken a big plunge off the tower before Spike's
spell could take Buffy over completely.

Maybe Spike's desire to isolate Buffy from the Scoobies in early season
6 isn't so much about tearing her down psychologically and leaving her
vulnerable to him?it's about keeping her away from the Scoobs so they
won't notice she's falling under his spell. (Which is taking longer
than he expected, since she's the Slayer and she's been dead, and the
talisman [Buffybot] keeps getting broken, so Spike can't use that to
reinforce the spell anymore.)

Maybe the reason Buffy first kisses Spike in "Once More, With Feeling"
is because she's just been put under another spell, by Sweet, and that's
why Spike's spell has just kicked into high gear. Notice that she only
kisses him after she finally breaks down and sings.

Maybe the reason Spike so desperately grabs Buffy at the end of
"Life/Heaven" is because he can tell that she's about to give in, and
doesn't want her to die when he's so close to getting what he wants.
Maybe the reason Spike bugs out of "Where Do We Go From Here" is because
he thought she'd come to him right away and he's disappointed again.

Maybe the reason Buffy resists Spike at the start of "Tabula Rasa" is
because Sweet's spell has worn off, and Buffy is still capable of
fighting off Spike's, if nothing else mystical is going on. Maybe the
reason she kisses him at the end of "Tabula Rasa" is because she's just
been hit with another spell, and doesn't have the strength to fight any
more.

And then, bit by bit, little by little, that long ago spell takes over
Buffy's personality, removing everything in it that we once loved and
making her as devoted to Spike as the Buffybot once was. 

Maybe the reason Spike asks Buffy if she likes him in "Dead Things"
isn't because he's insecure?maybe it's just that he's pissed off
things haven't gone any farther, and is checking to see if the spell is
making any progress.

Maybe the reason Buffy fondles Spike's crypt door in "Dead Things" isn't
because she weally, weally, wuvs him?but because that's the locus of
the mystic energy that's slowly, subtly, controlling her mind.

Maybe the reason Spike turns into a whimpering eight-year-old at the end
of "As You Were" isn't because PoorWiddleWilliam is so goshdarn upset
that Mean Old Buffy just plays games?but because he's desperate to get
Buffy out of there before she or Riley finds the spell paraphenalia. 

Maybe the reason Spike rubs Buffy's face in the fact that she hasn't
disinvited him from her home in "Beneath You" is because he's reassuring
himself that the spell still works.

Maybe all of this has just been a trick. (Or maybe not?but here's to
hoping!)
