Re: Something I've noticed.
good discussion.
for me the bottom line is that fanfic is about imagination, the
fulfillment, exercise and stimulation thereof. Whether it's a Clem/
Joyce/Faith bondage threesome or Buffy being president of the
United States or Spike and Ira Rosenberg settling down together
and opening a florist shop.
to borrow the sentiment- if not the actual quote- from the that
Great Oracle Missy Ellliott:
"This is FANFIC ya'll! "
It's not NYTImes journalism, it's not a sex manual, it's not a court
transcript. It is what it is, yo! If it was supposed to be perfect ,
most of us wouldn't be allowed to do it.
if it floats your boat to write it, write it. If it floats your
boat to read
it, read it.
If you feel the author is way off base in some direction but still
redeemable, send them some good constructive feedback.
If they simply pissed you off, tell them.
If you find what they offensive, hurtful or misogynistic, it's your
call. Take them to task, post a warning to other readers, have
the mod yank the fic, turn off the computer and go take a walk,
write your own fic, whatever.
Just like the rest of you, I've read truly execrable f/f fic by
lesbian/
bi writers who shall remain nameless, truly transcendant f/f fic by
men (coughKirayoshiMadHamletcough) and everything in
between and on either side
most commonly applicable fault/dead giveaway I find with F/F fic
by men is that things are a little too , to borrow Principal Wood's
airquotes, "enthused." there's too much of everything all the
time.
but I'm with Rainne (I think it was Rainne's post) - I find bad
grammar a far worse offense.
One thing I'm always curious about when people make these
statements about who could and shouldn't write what is:
just how far do they want to take this? Are we supposed to have
certifiying committees of bisexuals/lesbians stamping their
approval on fics?
(If so, I'll make the sacrifice and volunteer for the job...as long
as
there's a decent honorarium and per diem, of course....<g>)
BTW, bless you, Connor, for going the extra mile and getting your
stuff beta-ed by your sis.
and on the other hand, what about the lesbian/bi writers who
don't make the cut ? If my upcoming update(s) to my first ever
bona fide NC-17 don't pass someone's Lesbian test, what's
going to happen to me? Am I to be drummed off the list at
sunrise, taken to the internet city limits and thrown out, or what?
well, that's enough ranting for me - carry on, ya'll. Let's have fun!

I've edited because the tone seemed a tad harsh, IMO.
