First off, welcome back to the list, Mad-Hamlet. Second, is it just me or does anyone else hear Dennis Miller's voice in their heads whenever they read one of MH's rants?

Oh well...

I remember reading an interview with veteran writer Ray Bradbury, who was asked why he wrote science-fiction. His reply; "What else is there?" Bradbury didn't write what he knew, especially considering that he lived in Manhattan and seldom traveled more than a hundred miles away from his home, as he distrusted most forms of modern transportation. Yet he spun stories of time travelers, monsters, expeditions to Mars, children becoming lions in virtual reality African veldts, automated houses that outlive their owners, Grim Reaper figures taking children through space and time on Halloween. And more to the point he sold the readers on these stories. He made them work. It's hard work to do but when you pull it off, it's nothing short of pure magic.

If we all 'wrote what we knew', then no one would be even remotely interested in my stories, as my life's experiences so far have been kinda vanilla. It's not 'write what you know', it's 'write what you can imagine'.

And in the immortal words of Han Solo, "I can imagine quite a bit."
