Of the eight heterosexual relationships the Scoobies had, only one s.o. (Jenny) died and that was essentially because of her own actions. (Not saying she deserved it, but there was a causal link to her actions.) Several of the straight dates went on to happy healthy lives (Riley, Angel, Cordelia) and any trauma there was in the breakup was because of what the characters did. Contrast that with 1 gay relationship (to that point) = 1 dead lesbian, struck down out of the blue by a bullet that defied all the laws of physics, right after several continuous sex sessions. "Why, it's almost like God hates them dykes and is punishing them," the homophobes say, and Joss gave them the ammunition to do so. Also, 8 straight relationship = 0 psychotic murdering exes after breakups. 1 gay relationship = 1 loony man-skinning, world-ending dyke. 'Cause lezbos are just crazy, don't you know.

Alright look I could sit here and argue semantics for days on end and nit pick till the cows come home about what Joss did and did not mean by the actions he made the characters do. But the reality is that they are stupid arguements. Who cares. I find the fact that people are getting so upset over the death of tara kinda silly. Yes there are parts i don't like (like the fact that she died after the first time they had on screen sex) but the reality is that Joss broke real ground by making willow gay and giving her an tara a relationship for as long as he did. Its ridiculous to expect a straight man to get it right in his first shot. Not even getting into the fact that it is impossible to make the gay community happy. If its not one thing its another. As a community we are always disattisfied with the representations of us on TV. Perhaps we should try and get over ourselves and just enjoy the events going on in the media and the world for the momentous occasions that they are.
I realize i prolly just pissed off half the list but since this is a Buffy/Willow list and I'm sick of discussing Tara and having to delete the ranting e-mails of people who keep dissing Joss. Yes I'm pissed off that he left the show in the incapable hands of Marti Noxious and that he did some things to characters that I really didn't like. But I also give him props for a show I have genuinely enjoyed for 7 years and am heartily tired of listening to people bitch about it. Get over it. It was a groundbraking and wonderful if you hated the last few seasons concentrate on the ones you enjoyed or read the fic that has rewritten it to your liking.
