In defense of Zoe and in response to everyone else, I
have to say I don't get the connection between evil
Willow and evil lesbians either. Suppose Oz had
stayed with the show and Willow never became gay, then
apply the same set of circumstances. I think Willow
would have become evil(hetero) Willow and done the
exact same thing. I simply saw the evil Willow plot
as grief and revenge, and how the two together can
really mess a person up - no matter what their sexual
orientation.
And to say Joss sucks eggs as a storyteller because of
season 6 and 7 - I don't get that either. I think
everyone on this list is defining those two seasons
within the narrow parameters of the B/W 'ship and
nothing else. Sure, I hated to see the B/S stuff and
would rather have seen B/W hook up, but I thought
there was still good storytelling there. From the
beginning of season 1 Joss has told stories about real
life through the show. Even given the sad state of
affairs for our 'ship and Willow, Joss still mirrored
life pretty well, IMHO.
Maybe I'm too simplistic, but in RL sometimes good
people go bad, and bad people turn good - i.e. Willow
and Spike. And in RL sometimes people get lost and
don't act like themselves for awhile - i.e. Buffy post
resurrection. Sometimes people have to do things they
aren't cut out for - like Buffy working at the DMP;
sometimes people get addicted to things -like Willow
did to magick; sometimes love/lust/passion don't make
sense - like B/S; sometimes people get manipulated by
others - like Spike did by the First; sometimes people
live in their own little fantasy world - like Andrew.
I could go on and on the number of times Joss hits the
RL nail on the head in season 6 and 7, the same as he
did other seasons. I think the only reason it didn't
seem as good sometimes is because things were darker
than in seasons past, and the scoobies weren't as
close--but hey, that mirrors RL sometimes, too!
Like I said, maybe I'm too simplistic, or maybe I'm
missing something because I didn't see a couple of
season 6 eps and missed quite a few season 7 eps
(including the last several and the finale), or maybe
my perspective is skewered because I'm one of the few
female heteros on this list - which, BTW, don't
confuse that with not understanding gay and lesbian
points of view because I have a homosexual brother,
have had seveal lesbian friends, and could easily see
myself in a lesbian relationship given the right woman
(it's just my hormones that prefer men :) ). Anyway,
whatever the reason, I challenge everyone to take a
step back from the B/W 'ship, if possible, and look at
the last two seasons again. Sure, maybe a few eps
sucked, but so did some in every other season.
