Merrick Question

Merrick was Buffy's first watcher but how did he die?

 

In the movie I seem to remember Buffy being flippant, Lothos appears, Merrick saves her.  Then Merrick kills himself before Lothos can turn him?

 

In the comic book, Lothos uses that Master mind control to subdue Buffy, Merrick saves her by shooting Lothos and then he kills himself?

 

Or am I just totally off base?

 

Second question is: How d o you spell Lothos?
