Nobody posted ANYTHING today? That's...not right.
So, with 35 minutes to go, let me head into the breach, regarding a
recent topic and something I wanted to mention.
About the poll: well, I always *wanted* Buffy to be with Willow, of
course, but as for who the damaged creature that was S7 Buffy might have
been best with, I'm gonna go off the board and say Xander. He can give
her the peace that she needs without being pushed out by her emotional
state. Willow would have more difficulty in a relationship that was
such a one-way street, and Giles-perhaps the only other person that
could soothe Buffy as the fractured remnant she'd been reduced to would
require-would I think be just as thrown by Buffy's inability to
reestablish the partnership and teamwork that had marked that
relationship as Willow would be spun by the lack of the intimate
emotional connection she and Buffy had once had (and should have again,
but we're talking about S7 Buffy, and she *doesn't* have that, may even
be incapable of it now).
Dan, you hit the nail on the head! Never mind the emphasis on Spike, the de-emphasis on the Scoobs or the relatively lackluster big-bad, the real and final blame for the fall of BtVS during the final two seasons must fall on the writers who chose to take a strong, vibrant and compassionate woman, capable of great things despite her understandable foibles, and turn her into a dependant, weak-willed idiot, a fractured shell of her former self. No wonder SMH wanted out!
I recently stumbled onto a forum regarding Buffy over at www.comicbookresources.com, and someone suggested how ME could have made Season Seven much better, using the same tools that Joss used in the show. His suggestions;
1) The concept behind "Conversations with Dead People" should have been expanded, and the First Evil should have been allowed to really mindf*** the Scoobs. How about having Warren confront Willow about her killing him? Or Ben accusing Giles?
2) Spike's soul should have been explored more. The idea that just because he had a soul now didn't mean that he was automatically reformed.
3) The final episodes; Caleb would be the main threat, not the Turok Han. After the Scoobs and the Potentials get their butts handed to them by Caleb, Buffy and Willow, in desperation, unleash the power of that scythe-thing, unlocking all the Potentials in the world. And Buffy and the Potentials in Sunnydale would be just enough power to defeat Caleb.
But that is what the First wanted. The existence of hundreds of Slayers tipped the balance too far, allowing the First to tip it back. As long as there was one Slayer, the First was held in check. When Buffy was resuscitated after Kendra was called, the First grew in power. Now that hundreds of Slayers exist, the First can finally escape its imprisonment and assume human form. And we're talking Sauron-level power here!
The only way to imprison the First again would be for Buffy and Willow to reverse the magic of the scythe, resulting in only one Slayer existing again, Faith. Thus Buffy would no longer be the Slayer, but would be allowed a normal life again. As the First re-entered its imprisonment, it would warn Buffy and the others that it could still summon all the vampires and demons in the immediated vicinity, thus bringing about the apocalypse the old-fashioned way.
"Not bloody likely," answers Spike, who uses that medalion to seal the Hellmouth once and for all at the cost of his own life, as he did in "Chosen".
In my mind this would have worked better. It would have allowed Buffy to regain her strength and actually be the heroine she once was, as well as rebonding herself to the Scoobs. It would have also made the First Evil a real threat. And the end of the show would make Faith the true Slayer, permitting a Faith spin-off in the future.
Anyone want to take the challenge?

"Friends are the DNA of society. They are the basic building blocks of life. If you have a couple of good ones, treasure them like gold. There's nothing better. Ever look at that MCI ad they have, "Friends and Family"? Who do they mention first? Your friends help you carry the big weight in life. That big burden we've all got called, 'What the Hell am I doing?'"
