from what I've read, the addiction story line was a Marti Noxon-driven idea.


I agree with you (I think) re Willow's "real" issues center around power, abandonment, 
etc..  To me the only possible way the clunky addiction metaphor works is as a 
secondary *symptom* of her previously established neuroses re power and 
abandonment but they pushed it into the forefront
