Re: Buff and Will in S6
I wasn't trying to imply that it should have been
B/W in the slashy sense (tho yay!).
I didn't think you were, I just realized in the middle of my post
that it was time for me to leave work, so I stopped
abruptly.without addressing the other stuff
images of Willow wielding power from on high, bringing Buff
back
from the grave (Willow=subject, Buffy=object), some subtle
control
stuff in After Life, and Buffy checking out -- all of these things
sort of pushed the narrative in a certain direction IMO that
suddenly vanished. Plus, Buffy's Big Thing was that she
couldn't
deal with being back. Yet there's no conflict with the person
most
responsible for that? How does that work?
My reading of s6 is that Spike and Willow were revolving around
Buffy, never really in the same place at the same time, yet
equally connected to her, not really in direct opposition to each
other, Buffy's survival in a weird way dependent on both of them.
I think it would have been entirely realistic to have the conflict be
between Spike and Willow (light vs dark, and of course, all
points in between as both of them could easily be both villain
and hero at varying points) AND have Buffy sort of in the middle
fighting them both and also wavering between each side-but of
course there's no clear black and white anywhere. In the early
part of the season, IMHO, SPike really was Buffy's lifeline. he
was the only character that showed anything approaching
consistent compassion for her, IMHO. The others, even though
we can all argue that their hearts were in the right place at one
time, were so freaked out by what they had done and over Buffy's
melancholy that they couldn't deal. I'm not going to go so far as
to say Spike's motives were pure, but the script suggested that
in the beginning, he simply reacted to her plight, not plotting
ahead to his advantage.
so that was the maybe. In a perfect world, I too would have loved
to see a B/W conflict but in a realistic world, they could have
pulled off , if not a classic triangle, at least a three way struggle
between B/S/W, all of whom were pretty much trashed by the end
of the season.
But all we got was the lame DMW - Buffy fight. That should have
been riveting and gutwrenching and just wasn't....
all just MHO, other's mileage may vary.
