RE: OT-What think ye of this?

In my opinion, writing isn't about making anything your own. It's about writing. Cover/tribute bands are nothing to do with it I don't think. Covering a song is using the original melody, harmony, bass and beat and playing it out as it has always been. With fanfiction, you're taking an element of someone else's idea, twisting and editing it, and it usually ends in a completely different way. Also, it gives you a chance to develop on subtext, not to mention introduce new characters, new worlds. 

I'm glad this person wasn't too rude about it though. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. But I don't agree that they ask people to keep it to themselves. Fanfic helps other aspiring writers. Just from reading some fics in the group I've learned quite a few new techniques and others are more than happy to give me tips when it comes to trying it myself.
