Why do I write?
What is the answer to that question? (And no, it's not '42'!)
I think that sometimes I like to write about Buffy, her allies and enemies, her joys and sorrows, for much the same reason that some people climb Everest. Because it's there. Becaus the show has an effect on us, because these people matter to us. This is a rare thing in popular entertainment. A select few major authors and creators have succeeded in making characters and situations that can live beyond their original form. George Lucas, J. R. R. Tolkein, J. K. Rowling, Gene Roddenbery, Stan Lee, Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster, Anne Rice and Joss Whedon, to name a few.
Having said that, I can see why many creators dislike fanfiction. For every "Sappho's Spell", there's at least ten stories where Buffy becomes a slut for no good reason other than to degrade her for a thousand words or so. The vast majority of fanfics out there are written by people who don't have any understanding of the properties they're writing about, let alone any concept of style, grammer or even spelling! As a fan of Star Trek, I have difficulty understanding why there are so many stories out there that pair Kirk and Spock. Which is odd seeing as how I can justify Buffy/Willow. But sorry, Kirk's too much of a raging hetero to ever get it on with another man, even his closest male companion. Same deal on the DS9 tales that set Chief Miles O'Brien up with Dr. Julian Bashir. Never mind that Miles is devoted to his wife and children!
I don't object to slash fic(although I tend not to read male slash pairings, just my personal preference). I object to slash or straight pairings that defy the logic of the source material, that toss aside all the characterization that went on before, all for the sake of getting Person A and Person B into bed together. I don't call that kind of story fanfiction. Because those who write such stories clearly hate the subject matter. They are not fans.

"Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you exactly what Christmas is all about.
"Lights, please. "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. "And that's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown." --Linus Van Pelt FONT> Willow: "It's a good fight, Buffy, and I want in."
