I don't know all the details, but I got the impression that SMG and AH, who had been close friends off-camera during the first three seasons or so, had drifted.  One rumor I heard was that SMG was jealous of AH's sudden movie success, which consisted pretty much of the three American Pie movies.  If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.
