For my own two cents, I give my highest recommendations to Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea stories, Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy, and Gene Wolfe's awe inspiring Book of the New Sun. And avoid Terry Goodkind like the Black Death. While we're on the subject, Do folks here tend to approach BtVS as horror or fantasy? I lean towards fantasy myself, more for tone than content.

I tend to lean toward the dark fantasy side of Buffy. While horror elements exist, it's hardly a slasher-type show, nor does Buffy face a lot of psychologically screwed opponents. The closest she got to that side was Dru, or maybe Ted Buchanen and he turned out to be a robot. Trust me, Buffy and the Scooby Gang, as much as we all love them, wouldn't last ten minutes against Hannibal Lechter.
If you want a good dark fantasy adventure novel, I would urge you to check out The List of Seven by Mark Frost. An exciting and spine-tingling yarn, the story involves a young Arthur Conan Doyle, who finds himself up against a conspiracy called the Dark Brotherhood who believe that he knows more about them than he does since he wrote about them in one of his short stories that he submitted to the British pulp magazines. He hooks up with a daring, and somewhat eccentric, government agent named Jack Spark
s to crack the Brotherhood's plan to overthrow the monarchy, and Sparks ends up inspiring Doyle to create the character of Sherlock Holmes. Will someone please make a movie out of this one?

I also enjoyed The Godmother by Elizabeth Anne Scarborough. A social worker in Seattle Washington, faced with budget cuts and a crooked city council, makes a wish for a Fairy Godmother for the city of Seattle, and gets one! The story mixes modern domestic politics and all-too-human evils with classic fairy tales.

"Friends are the DNA of society. They are the basic building blocks of life. If you have a couple of good ones, treasure them like gold. There's nothing better. Ever look at that MCI ad they have, "Friends and Family"? Who do they mention first? Your friends help you carry the big weight in life. That big burden we've all got called, 'What the Hell am I doing?'" --Jerry Seinfeld

Willow: "It's a good fight, Buffy, and I want in."
Buffy: "I kinda love you."
