Re: Fic: We Band of Buggered 2/2

>Ah, I disagree. (but this did make me think) I think Xander finally
realized he'll be the one left standing at the end. He can't heal
scars. And he can't changed what's happened or what it's done. If the
darkness in them won and swallowed them whole, he'd want there to be
someone to make sure that wasn't all that was remembered of them. And
if they went down in the fight... let's look at the last show. (consider
that your spoiler warning) Let's say that spell did kill Willow (a last
sacrifice/the price) and Buffy did die in the fight, I believe they
still would have won. That leaves Xander above, getting away on the
bus, and living. He would never be the same, but he'd be left at least
to tell the tale correctly. They may have only skimmed by him in season
7, but there is his talk with Dawn, the fact that he was willing to
leave with Dawn, and that he was fighting up above in the end with Dawn.

I both agree and disagree with your disagreement (oh God, I'm sounding like a re-run of 'Yes Minister').

I stand by what I said before about Xander going down with them if the darkness in them won...

BUT

I must admit that I looked at the Scooby dynamic in a vacuum (mostly due to my dislike of the Scooby-in-laws who have a tendency to fuck up said Scooby dynamic). The one thing that I think would make Xander stand back and watch Buffy and Willow sink is...

Dawn.

In Dawn we've got someone who engenders in Xander the same sort of loyalty, devotion, and love he has for Buffy and Willow (only without the sexual attraction, or at least nowhere near the level of sexual attraction he has for Buffy and Willow [even good dogs occasionally dream about chasing cars]). This kinda fits in with a Dawn theory that Tony's been kicking around for a couple of years**.

If Buffy and Willow died in the final battle of season 7 while Xander lived, I don't think that Xander would be actively looking to join them in the here-after. You're right in that Xander would want to keep alive the memory of who Buffy and Willow were (a driving force for Xander in 'House of Scooby').

If it were a matter of Buffy and Willow being overcome by the darkness that was within them (in short, they're alive but dark/evil) and there was no Dawn, Xander would go down fighting trying to bring them back to the light.

But with Dawn around, I think there would come a point that Xander would stop trying to bring them back into the light and concentrate on saving Dawn from Buffy and Willow with all the intensity he would trying to save Buffy and Willow from themselves. Dawn is the living, breathing manifestation of all that's good in Buffy and Willow and saving her would be the greatest way for him to ensure they were remembered.

**Tony's Dawn Theory**

When Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles joined together to form ComboBuffy at the end of season 4, it left an imprint of that union which the monks used in season 5 to make Dawn. The hand of Buffy (Summers blood), the mind of Giles, the spirit of Willow, and the heart of Xander all went into making Dawn.

So in short, I think we're both right. But the key here is Dawn (pardon the god awful pun).

Willow: "It's a good fight, Buffy, and I want in."
Buffy:  "I kinda love you."
