Actually Pern is in the future, lost colony ship crashes, mankind regresses
blah blah blah. Additionally Anne McCaffrey is the anti-fanfiction-beast.
She
disagrees with it, forbids it in her own work and has attempted to track
down
fanficcers of her work. Not a nice lady. Good storyteller though...at least
the early books.


I've heard the same thing about Anne Rice and Robert Jordan("The Wheel of
Time").  I think novelists have issues with fanfiction more than TV or movie
companies, because there are fewer people involved with the creation
process.  This is one thing we can still say in Joss's favor, as he doesn't
object to fanfiction, even if he hasn't given it his tacit approval.  I've
read in an interview with Joss that he at least understands why people enjoy
reading and writing fanfiction.
