Haven't seen Joss give this spin (although I've stopped reading his
interviews), but that's not what he said originally. He said it
was
about telling the world that SMG is a bitch&okay, he actually (in
his
interview with IGN FilmForce) blathered that it was about
illustrating
the difficulties between a star and an ensemble, but given Sarah's
criticism of S6 in "Entertainment Weekly" and the fact that she'd
gone
to Joss about it, and Joss's backhanded slaps at her through his
praise
of how well the "Fireflop" cast got along, I have very little
doubt that
when Joss says he was writing a Buffy-arc based on SMG and then
makes
Buffy an unbearable bitch who gets tossed from her own house, that
he's
working out some iss-yews with Sarah.
Y'know, I see fans bash Sarah like this all the time for not being
happy with Season 6, yet somehow the folks doing the bashing ALSO
are very critical of Season 6. You'd think they'd relate to her
concerns more than Joss's. He was pleased with that season.
But, again, the interview was very telling. What he's describing
about himself is EXACTLY what went on with Buffy in S7.

Buffy was always the leader. She made the decisions, from Day 1.
And Willow started having issues with it in Season 4. You can trace
Willow's problems, both internal and with Buffy, back to the second
season.
>and the rest of the group ([Spike,
>Tara-pimping snipped]) had issues with that,
Never. Not once. There was an occasional issue with one of
Buffy's
decisions
and, IMO, far too little of that. As Anya points out in "Never
Leave
Me", nobody else is even trying to convince Buffy to stake Spike,
despite his being a willing multiple murderer, even with the
soul. (If
he was able to resist the First's urging to drink from Buffy in
"Sleeper", then he was able to not kill the twelve other people.
He
just didn't care enough to try.) Instead everybody numbly nods and
accepts Buffy's decision to bunk the guy who's being "mind-
controlled"
by the very Evil they're fighting among them
but never with Buffy's leadership role. Heck, the "Everyone Sucks
But Me" speech in "Get It Done" is Buffy chewing people out for
relying
on her to make decisions, rather than acting on their own. To
which
Xander properly points out that they're letting her lead because
*that's
what she told them to do* (at the end of "Bring on the Night").
Even in "Empty Places", the challenge to Buffy's authority comes
from
the Potentials and Wood, not the Scoobs. Their "betrayal" is
nothing
larger than abstaining from the fray.
No, their abandonment was the deciding blow.
But, who was proven right?
As for Spike, explaining him would take something of an essay.
Suffice it to say, though, back on the newsgroup I figued he'd had
to have been a shy, introverted guy who liked poetry a year before
Fool For Love, so he was written consistantly for years. He does
happen to be one of my four favorite characters from the series
(besides Buffy, Willow, and Faith), but I'd rather not go into
an "Analyzing Spike" essay, here. I try to keep things Buffy and
Willow, here. I'd rather talk about Willow's issues than Spike's,
here. I'll save Spike discussion for the right forums.
Which is why I'm going to try to drop out of this discussion. I
haven't been able to continue those two series I've been writing,
and I want to put my thoughts and energy back into them. They're
more fun.
