Re: Re: OT rambling
Yes, by all means, don't let this distract you from fics. Just one
clarification&
Y'know, I see fans bash Sarah like this all the
time for not being happy with Season 6, yet
somehow the folks doing the bashing ALSO
are very critical of Season 6.
Huh? Wha? Huh? I said JOSS hated SMG for criticizing S6, not me! I'm
all "you go girl!", believe me. I'm glad SMG told him that the whipped,
pathetic, drifting Buffy of Season Sux was outside the character, glad
she told TV Guide Online that she'd only return for S8 and beyond if
Joss made the show fun again, glad she told "The View" that Spuffy was
definitely over, period, they're never going back there.
A wise producer would have realized that both widespread publc dislike
for the season and an unhappy star was a hint that something needed to
be fixed, and that in any event, he needed to fix his relationship with
Sarah. (It had apparently been severely strained over the course of
S5-S6, due to Joss's absenteeism, the difficulties with SMG's
"Scooby-Doo" filming schedule, Sarah's uncertainty about reupping for
S6-S7, and conflicts regarding the musical.)
Alas, Joss's response was less "okay, I'll fix this" and more "okay,
that's the last straw!" I'll fix YOU, Bitch!" Hence Season 7, aka
Joss's Revenge.
He was pleased with that season [S6].
Well, goody for him. It was the least popular with critics, viewers,
and his cast (at the timeS7 may have ultimately been hated more), so
he might want to rethink his opinion.
Of course, Joss probably thought he didn't have to worry about whether
anyone liked BtVS but him because he was done with it (although he let
Sarah take the blame for "ending Buffy" because he's Just So Classy).
He thought he didn't have to worry about the old show because he'd make
"Failedfly" such a big hit no one would remember "Buffy".
Ooops. (Hee!)
And, okay, a few more opinions&
The main conflict within the group was that
Buffy had grown into THE leader,
Buffy was always the leader. She made the >>decisions, from Day 1.
And Willow started having issues with it in >Season 4.
Kind of an OT answer, no? You said there was S7 conflict because
Buffy's role had changed, I said her role hadn't changed and you start
talking about how Willow felt about the S4 dynamic?
(I also have a large dispute with your interpretation of "I'm not your
sidekick!", which I think is one of the most misinterpreted quotes in
the series, but I took that out on the second edit because you're right
that we don't need to branch farther afield.)
But, who was proven right [in "Empty
Places"]?
I said I thought her logic was correct. Indeed, I'll go further and say
that the conflict was mostly written about forced, fake issuesBuffy
doesn't know the Potentials' names? Wha?just to try and manipulate
us into taking Buffy's side.
But despite that, most of the audience hated Buffy by then and cheered
when she got the boot. And within the story, even her being right about
the vineyard doesn't excuse her complete mishandling of the group
dynamic. There's more to getting people to follow you than "I'm right
and you're wrong! Shut up and do what I say!"
(And because the whole thing was written to pimp Spike, The Only True
Friend, leading to disgusting Cuddle of Chastity in "Touched" [Airing on
the one-year-anniversary of the rape! Ha, you thought Spuffy was over,
Sarah? Joss'll show you, bitch! No woman speaks to him!], most of the
audience tended to disbelieve Buffy's victory later in the ep and scream
"writer fiat!". I can't tell you some of the flak I've taken for
defending her logic in going to the vineyard.)
Back on the newsgroup I figured he'd had
to have been a shy, introverted guy who liked
poetry a year before Fool For Love, so he was >written consistantly for
years.
"Had to have been" seems a little much, regardless of what validation
you got from the later story.
While I can understand your thrill at having your hypothesis placed in
canon (heck, you may even have inspired their idea!), William the Barely
Literate Poet Who's Too Stupid To Think Of A Rhyme For "Gleaming" was
not in ME's plans pre-S5.
In the "Buffy Bestiary" featurette on the Season 2 DVDs, which were
recorded during S4, David Greenwalt talks about Spike, and he's still
talking up the "Cockney brawler" backstory, which was the general
impression most folks had gotten of the "bad, rude man" up to then.
Your alternate hypothesis may have better served the coming Spuffy story
(should we blame you? Get the torches! <g>), but it was not the original
intent.
