Kind of an OT answer, no? You said there was S7 conflict because
Buffy's role had changed, I said her role hadn't changed and you
start
talking about how Willow felt about the S4 dynamic?

(I also have a large dispute with your interpretation of "I'm not
your
sidekick!", which I think is one of the most misinterpreted quotes
in
the series, but I took that out on the second edit because you're
right
that we don't need to branch farther afield.)

Willow's issues built and built over the years, over a lot of things, but the roots go back to S2, where we first really saw a very negative element of her otherwise utterly lovable personality. I'll expand on that in a bit, and how it strained things between her and Buffy, but that'll be a whole separate post. It may even end up being a FEW posts, as I tend to go on a bit when analyzing Willow :)

Basically, it all began with Cordelia Chase.
In the "Buffy Bestiary" featurette on the Season 2 DVDs, which were
recorded during S4, David Greenwalt talks about Spike, and he's
still
talking up the "Cockney brawler" backstory, which was the general
impression most folks had gotten of the "bad, rude man" up to then.
Your alternate hypothesis may have better served the coming Spuffy
story
(should we blame you? Get the torches! <g>), but it was not the
original
intent.

Originally, he wasn't supposed to last past six episodes. He was originally going to die in What's My Line, setting up Dru to be the main villain for Season 2. But, characters often develop in ways not originally expected. Spike ended up being more than his original conception, so he survived beyond when he was supposed to. It's like how it's a safe bet that a certain shy hacker wasn't intended to wind up as, in Andrew's words, Buffy's "lesbian witch".

Speaking of which, Andrew needs to watch who he's assigning ownership to. I don't think Kennedy would be too happy to hear that. :)
