Well, if you're going to accuse me of "grasping at straws" for 
disagreeing with you...

Fact:  That subplot for Season 7 was planned during the early stages 
of plotting Season 5.  Source:  Anthony Stewart Head.  So, from 
that, I think it's reasonable to conclude that the Season 7 arc was 
planned several months before The Gift was written.  After all, why 
have a subplot that detailed already planned for a season you had no 
plans on doing?  That's not "grasping at straws", as you call it.  
That's drawing a logical conclusion from what ASH said, and when he 
said it happened.  

Also, I'm pretty sure Dawn wasn't planned in the original layout of 
the series.  She seemed a bit, well, sudden, like a story arc that 
was thrown together at the spur of the moment.
