Could we get the actual source of the ASH quote, please?  IIRC, he
sometimes gets episodes (and possibly, years) mixed up.  I could quite
easily see Pointless!Fakeout!Giles coming up in discussion during early
S6, where they were wondering how to use Tony's new recurring status to
make Giles's sporadic reappearances interesting.

And of course, noodling about a possible subplot does not, ipso facto,
mean that the main arc was planned, rivet by rivet, years in advance,
and must be accorded the respect of Holy Writ.  Plenty of ideas have
been cogitated on this show and never came to pass. 

Just off the top of my head, wrt Xander, he was supposed to hook up with
Buffy (the S1-S2 plan), be gay (seed planted with him long before it was
with Willow), and get vamped (original idea for S7, as I understand),
and none of those three happened, in the end.

So even if ASH has the chronology on "hey, maybe we'll bring back the
First Evil and tease the audience with 'is that *really* Giles?'
someday" correct, I think it's a loooong stretch from that to "the S7
arc was planned long ago as the show's final plot".

And even that, of course, would have nothing to do with whether Buffy's
sudden reversion to "WAAAAH!  I don' wanna be the Slayer!  Lemme stick
the job with thousands [thousands? how? what? how? WTF????] of untrained
snotnoses while I run off to Rome and play stay-at-home Mom to Dawn!"
was in any way consistent with YEARS of previous character development
that showed her taking *more* and *more* responsibility, not seeking to
slough it off. (See "Welcome to the Hellmouth", "Never Kill A Boy On the
First Date", "Prophecy Girl", "Halloween", "What's My Line, Part 2",
"Killed by Death", "Anne" and "Faith, Hope, & Trick", for starters.)

As far as I can tell, Slayerdom only shifted from being The Thing That
Makes Buffy Special (and thus a metaphor for every adolescent's search
for identity) to Horrible, Horrible Burden Forced on Women By Bad Bad
Evil Rapist Men and If You Love Your Child You Must Quit (Bad Nikki!
Spike was good and just to kill you and should never apologize!) when
Joss decided he didn't give a fuck about Buffy and that she was only
there to fluff Spike with her Vagina Of Redemption (Hallelujah!) and
give him her Seal of Approval by HAVING LOVING ROMANTIC SEX WITH HER
RAPIST (Joss says this is what happened in the blackout scene in "Total
Shit", er, "Chosen" and that "it's important" we're able to believe
this, on his commentary), so naturally, anything that makes Buffy have
happiness outside of Spike, (such as the Scoobs being able to understand
her [instead of "I love my friends, but&"] or confidence and comfort
in her identity as The Slayer) has to be trashed.

See, that's why I didn't want to get into this.&grumble&

[Not to mention the paragraph I just snipped here.  Just don't be so
quick to assume, generally, I'd say.]
