Which we were never going to see again, regardless. Sunnydale was
going to be gone, for us, anyway. But, for the characters, we
know
there's life AFTER the Hellmouth. We left them with hope for the
future, rather than condemned to an early and painful death.
Sure, it messes up some fanfic, but really, they had no
responsibility to maintain a status quo for the fic writers.
Their
only responsibility was to finish the story THEY started.
Okay, here's where you lost any support from me. It _does_ matter
that Sunnydale is now the 'Crater-Formerly-Known-As.' It does _not_
matter that we will never see it again.
For the past _seven_ years, Buffy has been fighting for
Sunnydale's survival and, in the end, it doesn't seem to matter. It
was destroyed anyway.
All of the characters were tied to Sunnydale in some way. They
grew up there, they buried their mother or lover or friends there,
they hung out at places in Sunnydale.
Hope? For what? That they will never visit their mother's, or
friends, or lover's grave. They will never get to go to the Bronze
again, they will never get to ordr mochas at the Espresso Pump?
So, it doesn't matter that _we_ will never see Sunnydale. But it
_does_ matter that the characters will never see Sunnydale again.
They were fighting for the world's survival, and the people who
lived in Sunnydale, not for the buildings of Sunnydale, themselves.
By the end, everyone had finally gotten the good sense to clear out
of a place that existed solely for demons to feed on, and they
weren't going back. Compared to the survival of the world, and
everyone living in it, the Bronze and Expresso Pump were a small
price to pay. Not that there was anyone left to enjoy them,
anyway. And, when they finally closed the Hellmouth, the group was
going to leave, regardless. They were only sticking around that
town out of a sense of obligation. Once Sunnydale was no longer the
center of the Big Brewing Evil, they were going to have to go
elsewhere. Like Cleveland. Or to open an office supply store in
Vegas as a front for fighting the evil activity, there. And nearby
Santa Carla has almost as big a vampire problem as Sunnydale (That's
what I always hated about Santa Carla), though the locals there seem
to have it under control. Then there's New Orleans, which not only
is full of Big Brewing Evil, but Pretentious Big Brewing Evil. As
if the vamps weren't enough, there's all those people in Seattle
decapitating each other (Or is it Vancouver?) and knocking out the
power. Throw in the situation in England with those evil wizards
and Buffy and Company have a full plate.
I think Anya, Spike (as far as they knew), and a chunk of the girls
was a bigger loss for the group than Sunnydale.
