I find myself guilty of having Buffy call Willow "Wills" all
throughout "Song", but I agree largely - "So what if it's not cannon?"
I like to stick to things as much as possible, and I probably won't
use the nickname in any future fics, but I don't object to any that do
use it, or see them as worse because of it.
