And I know the topic of subtext is going to be brought up, but those words never came out of Buffy's mouth(not I love you but I'm in love with you), but we accept it. Why can't the nickname be accepted as well? Anyway, just my opinion, but I like it. I think it's cute, coming from Buffy, Xander, Tara or whoever.

When it comes to nicknames I don't think there's too many hard and fast rules (with the way Joss took canon I tend to ignore it as much as I can).

Personally, I try to use them in the appropriate circumstances. For example, Giles doesn't use nicknames when talking to or about any of the Scoobies. In my fics 'Will', 'Wills', and 'Buff' are pretty much only used occasionally by Buffy, Willow, and Xander. Faith gets called 'F' by Buffy only when Buffy's pissed off at Faith or very occasionally as a response to Faith calling Buffy 'B'. Willow is 'Red' more often than not and Xander occasionally gets Xan or more rarely Toyboy/Boytoy (depending on if it's pre or post 'The Zeppo'). Cordelia gets 'Cordy' if she's a Scooby or from Xander if it's pre Scooby Cordelia. Xander is the only one to call Cordelia 'Cor' but only very rarely and only if they're friends or dating.

The above has little or no basis in canon and is just my own half assed ideas, but like I said before, canon (and Joss) can kiss my ass.
