If any of the core four were going to die, it would have been Giles, 
most likely.  This was the classic Hero's Journey, and the Mentor 
figure often doesn't make it to the end (Merlin, Obi-Wan).  That's 
why I suspect Dumbledore won't make it to the end of the Harry 
Potter series.  Of course, Spike was supposed to die, but they 
decided they wanted him on Angel.

Whedonverse thing so it was a given: it's the real end. And we had a 
very powerful final. My fav character died (about 5 ep after my 
other fav character died) and despite the tears that didn't want to 
stop falling I was like "My God this is so good" (SM Much?)

A comparison we were discussing on the Angel newsgroup recently was 
with the two big Homer epics.  In their structure, main characters, 
and endings, BtVS was, essentially, The Odyssey, while Angel was The 
Iliad.  Which one people preferred matched up with which of the 
Homer epics they preferred.  You can even compare the main 
characters, Angel to Achilles, and Buffy to Odysseus.  Like 
Odysseus, Buffy's a Trickster Hero, was extremely reluctant to join 
the fight, but always did what needed to be done, was second to none 
as a fighter, but won most of her major victories by pulling a fast 
one on the enemy (It was Odysseus who won the Trojan War with the 
big horse thing).
