Re: Return of the Lurking Nyrond -- FIC: Fimbul (1/12) Revised & Reposted

Dan, I think maybe you were trying to be too tactful because it's been
such a quiet week and you were just glad to see someone posting. ;-)

Patty's feedback serves absolutely no useful purpose. Dan addressed the
"please do not post" in point #1. I would just change the words "a little
rude" to "extremely rude". Her "story is boring" is an opinion, not a
critique, and as such serves only to tell us that Patty finds the story
boring. Who cares? I know I don't. And it certainly doesn't make Soren
Nyrond a "terible (sic) writer" - just that Patty evidently doesn't care
for her style.
In my opinion, if you are going to tell an author you don't like their
story, you should at the very least tell them, in specifics, why you
didn't like it - not just "story is boring". Part of the purpose of this
group is to help out fledgling writers (although Soren is far from
fledgling) and to help all writers improve and if you can't at least take
the time to offer some pointers or specifics then just keep your negative
opinions to yourself because all they can do is cause hurt. Had this been
a first time author, such a negative (and mean) feedback could very well
have them scurrying back into lurker-dom, never to be heard from again.

Finally, Soren, as a longtime lurking member of this group I remember
when this was originally posted and am anxiously waiting to see what
revisions and additions you have in store for us. Thanks for the revised
reposts. Michael

[Patty-
Glad you're providing feedback, be it pro or con. Two things, though: 1) Unless the author has asked for opinions on whether to continue posting, it's a little rude to tell them not to post. Critique away, but it's not your decision whether someone posts. You don't have to read it, and can always delete the message without doing so. 2) When giving feedback, please don't include the original fic with the fb, as it clogs inboxes. Quoting excerpts to make a point is fine, but just leaving the whole thing attached (in HTML, no less) eats too much space.

Thanks, and again, thanks for your opinion.
