Re: Re: Half a Library is better than none (and more Links news)

Good and bad news, on various link-related subjects.
GOOD NEWS: Since Slayerhacker was the original archive for these lists,
none of those fics are actually gone. They're all in the posts archives.
BAD NEWS: The posts archives are a pain to use.   (Blah font, hard to
find, in parts, Yahoo ads, etc.) I really prefer the HTML. And some of
the stuff isn't archived anywhere else. Including some of my faves, like
Janine's "Starlight" (thank God I printed it out at my dad's last
Thanksgiving) and the series starting with "Not So Bad Beer".
GOOD NEWS: Archive.org's Wayback Machine is a useful tool, and the main
page was recorded by their webcrawlers several times, including the link
that the_lx4 gave us.
BAD NEWS: Unlike with other sites accessed in this way, I can't get the
links to the fics to work at all. the_lx4, do you know what's going
wrong? Because I'd gladly make use of tinyurl and keep the link in the
active folder.
In any event, the banners and layout (and probably the fanarts) are
gone, as the Wayback Machine tends to have a problem with images.
Depressing.
(Impossible dream: a complete archive of all B/W. Kimber's done a great
job at IKOLY, but that depends on author uploads, and I'd just love for
there to be a one-stop destination, so we never have to depend on this
site and that site and so on and so on. Sigh.)
BAD NEWS (re Between the Sheets): I was going through some old posts and
saw a reference to some fics there that I haven't seen elsewhere.
(Again, might be in the post archives, but not my first choice course of
action.) So I thought I'd use the Wayback Machine to reach them, but
apparently the ISP, gettps.com, now shows up as a redirect, even when
viewing archived pages. Some technical issue with the webcrawler, I
suppose. Does someone more technically literate than I know how to view
these pages as they were (the whole point of the process)? Or does
someone know of another address the site once used, and perhaps the
Wayback Machine can view those pages for me?
GOOD NEWS (re various Geocities sites): Actually the carnage wasn't that
bad.   Galahad's "Her Slayer" isn't where it was, but I found it on
another site, and changed the URL. Doggie's "Hide and Seek" (in the
BtVSSlash subfolder) hadn't vanished, they'd just rearranged the site a
little. Ditto "Falling Asleep"Francis split his site in two, so he
could host a friend's Smallville fics, but his fic archive (now called
"When The Sun Sets") is still there, and now has a B/W/T and a B/F/W/T,
so I put it in "Authors' Pages", rather than just linking to the fic
again. (I was also glad to discover that he was the author of a W/C
piece that I'd seen once on UCSL and spent a lot of time trying to find
again.) In fact, as I can tell, there's only one casualty besides
Slayer/Hacker&
BAD NEWS (re ~lusty wrong feelings~):   Shannon's site seems to be the
casualty I spoke of. And since that's the only place most of her fics
(and possibly others') were posted, I'm concerned. Especially since I
don't recall her posting them hereI think she only posted on the
buffyandwillowslash list, which is also gone. (Maybe I'm wrong, maybe
she posted here or on BuffyFemslashers. I hope.)
I suppose I should swing by FanForum and see what's up. Or, Cas, if
you're reading and can take a moment from your BAM-bliss <g> to fill us
in?
GOOD NEWS: Found three more archives with some B/W content (Pure and
Simple, Slumber Party, and The Willow Archive) and added them to the
"Multi-Author Archives" section. I've also reorganized the folders
there, put the "Authors' Pages" links in folders (alphabetical by
Author, not site name), and as mentioned, found new URLs for "Hide and
Seek" and "Her Slayer" and moved Francis to the "Authors' Pages"
section. Also found Janet F. Caires-Lesgold's new site, "Breaking the
Glass Box", so I've got a working URL for "Bizarre Love Triangle" again. Hang in there, Dan
PSWhy did SlayerHacker get wiped, anyway? There are plenty of sites
that have been dead longer (some in the links), certainly many that
haven't been updated for longer than ~ lusty wrong feelings ~ went
inactive. And I know I've been to Slayerhacker more recently than last
year, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Hmm.
