Re: Re: Half a Library is better than none (and more Links news)

When GeoCities started deactivating old sites, I was afraid something like
this might happen. So I took the liberty of downloading the site a few
weeks ago, and now I have an offline copy of SlayerHacker as it was then,
fics, art, layout and all. Two pieces were down already, the "Episode
shippiness" and "Quotes" sections, but the rest are intact.

As expected, the WayBack machine didn't crawl through a large section of the
site, but I believe I have most of the missing pieces. However, I don't
have the hosting power, nor could I get into contact with the original
maintainers for permission to redistribute.

So if someone might be interested in restoring Slayer Hacker, I can send the
files over. It weighs in at just under 12 megs, uncompressed, so it won't
be too much of a bandwidth hog.

Good and bad news, on various link-related subjects.

GOOD NEWS: Since Slayerhacker was the original archive for these lists,
none of those fics are actually gone. They're all in the posts archives.

BAD NEWS: The posts archives are a pain to use.   (Blah font, hard to
find, in parts, Yahoo ads, etc.) I really prefer the HTML. And some of
the stuff isn't archived anywhere else. Including some of my faves, like
Janine's "Starlight" (thank God I printed it out at my dad's last
Thanksgiving) and the series starting with "Not So Bad Beer".

GOOD NEWS: Archive.org's Wayback Machine is a useful tool, and the main
page was recorded by their webcrawlers several times, including the link
that the_lx4 gave us.

BAD NEWS: Unlike with other sites accessed in this way, I can't get the
links to the fics to work at all. the_lx4, do you know what's going
wrong? Because I'd gladly make use of tinyurl and keep the link in the
active folder.
In any event, the banners and layout (and probably the fanarts) are
gone, as the Wayback Machine tends to have a problem with images.
Depressing.
