OT the death of liberal america?

first a couple of pointers, my sister is gay and my brother served 6 months in Iraq with the army.

I'm a brit so I 'm pretty much an outsider to this all. what happened in America this week  reminds me of a wonderful cartoon I used to read called Bloom County where this bunch of kids and talking animals ran the 'meadow party', a bastion of liberalism in Regan's America. in one cartoon they're walking across the meadow when suddenly the ground shakes and they're knocked off their feet.

"Was that an earthquake?" asks one

"No" replied the other sadly, "The country just moved to the right again"
Bush won. Kerry conceded. No amount of accusations of dirty tricks can change that, bush won by 3 and a half million in overall percentage, he won swing state Ohio by over 100,000 votes (anyone else found themselves humming 'banks of the ohio' lately?)   

he won the congress, he won everything! no cheating alleged or required. kerry was correct and gentleman to concede (if nixon had acted like al gore did in florida last election JFK would never have been in the whitehouse).
personally I'd have voted for bush just to annoy michael moore who I consider a racist, whining, Nazi hypocrite. I am however, pro gay marraige and pro-choice and these aspects of bush's policy disturb me greatly (I refuse to define myself as 'pro-abortion', no one is actually PRO abortion!). but I think we won't see any change on either, bush is too savvy for that. as for the rest of the world, who cares? when I vote for my party in the british elections I want it to put britain first, I want the rest of the world to like us but my country comes first

but where kerry lost me was when he said that he would respond with force to attack on america. and i thought " you don't get it" post 9/11. you don't wait for them to come to you anymore. you go out and get them first, knock them down and kick them in the head. lie, cheat, steal kill. the CIA's motto should be "never look a man in the face when you're going to stab him in the back!". buffy doesn't go through life waiting for the vamps to come to her. she's goes out and takes the fight to them when they're at their weakest (she also tortures and kills in cold blood but that's another issue)

my main question is, what now? are we going to see Hilary Clinton (who i quite like) in 2008 or is this really the end of liberalism in America?
