And don't forget "Doppelgangland." See how devastating even the idea of Willow's death is to Buffy. Only the death of her mother effected her as deeply.
Agreed. Plus recall her stunned reaction to Vamp Willow. First she
sees Willow as a sexually exciting person for the first time("Hey,
Xander, who's your new friend...Holy God, you're Willow!") Then the
prospect of being hated by her best friend("You're a white hat. I
don't like you."). Both shocking moments, exacerbated by 'Willow'
vamping out in front of them.
Buffy in the end did more than save Willow's life, she magnified it. It
was Buffy's influence, more than anything else, that allowed Willow to
grow as a person and as a witch. At the same time, Willow helped Buffy
mature, finally shedding her cheerleader persona and growing as a
responsible adult.
Willow's development turned out to be a bit of a double-edged sword.
That's why some of my favorite 'shipper stories take place in season 6,
oddly enough. Not just to counter the poisonous effects of Spuffy, but
to demonstrate how severely weakened Buffy and Willow are when they're
not facing their respective demons(both literally and metaphorically)
together. If Willow had been more understanding of what Buffy was going
through, Buffy might not have sought solace and sex with Spike. And if
Buffy had put aside her self-pity to support Willow during her magic
crash-and-burn, we might have avoided that whole Dark Willow finale.
Sadly, happily adjusted people don't always make for good drama(this is
why there are still people who are pissed that Peter Parker and MJ
Watson got married in the Spider-Man comics). So maybe healthy 'ships
would have sunk BtVS as a concept.
Would anyone want to see Sarah Michelle Gellar and Aly Hannigan co-star
in something non-Buffy related? If they played different characters
than Buffy and Willow, would that chemistry still shine through?

Willow: "It's a good fight, Buffy, and I want in."
Buffy: "I kinda love you."
