I don't think buffy would be legally responsible, it looked like self-defense to me.  When someone comes at me with a knife and large stick thing, and I throw him into a pit I hope it's considered self-defense.

He hit Giles with the staff, then dropped it.  He dropped the knife while he was still holding Willow--he went feral and went to kill her with his bare hands and teeth.  Therefore, it was hand-to-hand combat against Buffy.  The law frowns on using lethal means to end unarmed conflict.

But mostly, I was thinking about Buffy's feelings about it.  I think she needs Willow cuddles after that.

Maybe willow didn't jump to xander's aid when dragged in unconscious because she knows he's been acting weird, and wants to find out why.

He was unconscious at the time.  Regardless of who she thought was in control when he was awake--Xander, the hyena, or a combination of the two--it was always Xander's body that she was kicking.

When it came down to her best friend since kindergarten and major crush since puberty versus her new friend of a few weeks, she was supporting the new girl and kicking the boy when he was down.  I think it's pretty indicative of her true feelings.
