I always believed that the end of the Codex was about 'the end of days' 
(the name given to this episode's moment in time) and, being the end, 
could see no further.  Indeed, it is the end of the slayer line as it 
has always been known.  Buffy forever is different.  There's the Slayer, 
then there is Buffy.  She kept proving she was better than the Slayers.  
When she died again, no one was called.  Nothing happened.  Well, other 
than Willow beginning to lose it altogether, but that's understandable, 
given their relationship.  Anyway, the Codex was done.  A new world 
order was beginning.

I will forever love the fact that Xander loves Buffy even if it isn't 
returned in the same way.  And he shows it.  It defines his actions 
again and again, beginning here: unconditionally.  Gotta give him his due.

Just as poignant, and so extremely obvious here, Buffy will die for 
Willow.  Even if Willow didn't ask her to the dance.  I know, I know, 
not really the point of the scene, or even a factor at all.  Still, I 
can't help but replay the talk between Buffy and her mom and 
misinterpret the whole thing-
(in no way actually quoting due to burned out memory cells)
Mom- no one asked you to the dance?
Buffy- someone, but...
Mom- not the right someone

What if Buffy had been secretly wanting Willow to suggest they go to the 
dance? (she couldn't possibly believe Angel would)  Just a very secret 
fantasy she'd been replaying in her mind.  Then this whole prophecy 
thing intruded and spun her.  It's remembered, in the midst of it all, 
in that moment with her mom.  Then of course she got the news about 
Willow... it makes the sudden turn around, why Willow was key to her 
picking up the Slayer mantle again, a little clearer. <g>  Or it could, 
in a fic.
