I halfway agree with you.  The thing the shamen put into the girl looked 
like an entity to me.  Some sort of living creature.  Therefore self-aware, 
and possibly the living embodiment of a primal mystical force, like the 
First was the embodiment of Evil.  My vote would be that the critter they 
put in the first Slayer was some sort of super-predator.  Something that 
hunted demons naturally.  That or the primal essence of Predator.  Either 
way, it's like getting a cat to solve your mouse problem.  Effective, but 
tends to leave body parts lying around.

I think the first Slayer was so isolated because there sort of were two 
beings trying to exist in one body.  Having the Slayer entity inside her 
made the girl too different from other humans and caused a constant internal 
conflict.  Buffy, on the other hand, is the result of thousands of years of 
the Slayer entity, and the human bloodlines that it inhabits slowly merging 
together.  They are no longer separate beings, but a single being somewhere 
in between the two originals.

If none of that makes any sense, it's because of sleep deprivation.  If 
anyone tells me they're confused, I'll try to clarify after I've had sleep 
and my brain is functioning on something other than cranberry fumes.
