It's origins are contained in the biggest, most popular, and possibly  
first Willow/Tara board: "The Kitten, the Witches and the Bad Wardrobe"  
also known as the Kitten Board  http://www.thekittenboard.com/board/
The name as a whole is a play on the title of the novel "The Lion, the  
Witch and the Wardrobe."  The Kitten is a referrence to the late and  
unlamented Miss Kitty Fantastico.  The Witches are obvious.  The Bad  
Wardrobe refers to the unflattering clothes that Amber and especially Aly  
were forced to wear.
Rather than form a word from the combination of the character names (e.g.  
Wiffy from WIllow buFFY) they took the name of their board, hence  
"Kittens."
