On story feedback/reviews
This message brought to you by the hordes of people who have reviewed a story I
posted to Ikoly yesterday (and will be posting here in a day or two after a little tinkering).
[1] Good/wanted fic feedback/reviews:
"It's a great/interesting/odd story. Thanks for sharing."
"I liked/hated/loved/despised your story and here is why."
"I think the following (X) would help/improve your story"
(My new story did get several of these (and the 'it ended
kind of abruptly' comments were very helpful.. so I'll probably
fix that before I post it here...) so those reviewers... along with
the usual suspects who take a fine-toothed comb to anything
I write are owed a pat on the back by future readers of that story.)
--------------------------------
On the other hand... I then received a flood of these:
[2] Undesired/pointless/useless fic feedback/reviews
"More chapters."
"Longer chapters"
"Where's the rest of it?"
"Gimme!"
"Don't stop now! Keep going."
------------------------------------
Okay... I'll admit that my pile of unfinished fics is now in the double digits.
(But I have yet to abandon any of them... even if it has been a LONG time
since I posted updates to some ofthe older ones. If I post a story somewhere
without an ending -- I would think it was obvious that I have more to write...)
A "review" demanding that I write more, telling me my chapters should
be longer, and NOTHING ELSE -- in fact any review that demands I
produce something as if the reader is entitled to it... (Hey, it's "free" folks!
You get what you pay for!)
Is kind of a turn-off. And certainly doesn't inspire me to write.
How long chapters are. In fact how long a story is... is all writer dependant.
(I know exactly how long each part of each story I write is.At this point in time
my writing style lends itself primarily to story "chunks" of between 3K to 4K
words. Any longer usually means the plot/idea for that part of the story got away
from me or I should have split it up into a more digestible portion.
Any shorter means either A. It was a challenge with a word limit. or B. I shouldn't have
written it in the first place.)
And that's it for my Friday afternoon psuedo-rant. I need to go get some lunch.
:-)...
