Word from Mad-Hamlet
Greetings,
>>I could be entirely wrong about this. Opinion?
Wrong?
Well that depends on arguments that Daredevil is in the same echelon as
BtVS,
which it isn't.
Thusly, it can be easily argued that the simplifications required for a
popular comic, which must always depend on the lowest common
denomination of a
cross-section of society to be profitable, not being upheld to the same
standards as BtVS, cannot be then used to argue for comparisons sake
for or
against events in the BtVS storyline.
And wasn't that a horribly overblown, hyper extended sentence?
Thus: Any attempt at comparison of burnout, brought on by a comparison
between
this type of story, and BtVS must be disregarded for the same reasons
as
comparsions between the stories as they are not of the same caliber,
quality
and freedoms. Or so I argue. I would probably have an easier time
making a
macro/micro comparisons between the events in Daredevil (Which I've
never
read) to any of the other major plot points going on in the Marvel/DC
world.
The...Mutant Depowering Thingie.
The Civil War
Spider Man/Mary Jane thing.
in DC
The One Year Later
The Cross Over Plot Complex From Hell that preceded One Year Later
The Rumored plan to kill off Bruce Wayne.
Bear this last little factor in mind: I don't read these comics. I
never have
and yet I still know of these plots which just goes to show how spread
out
they are and thus shallow. BtVS was never shallow.
I thought as you once upon a whatever and now I don't.
Quite a bit of it had to do with losing interest in walking away from
the
whole shebang those years ago and not giving it a seconds thought save
for the
'Am I sure my DVDs are in good condition so I can share them with my
children
at the right time?'. A few weeks ago events conspired against me
though:
The first was a book about BtVS given to me as a Christmas Present by
my
mother. 'Why Buffy Matters' by Rhonda Wilcox. Apparently she's a world
renown
....Buffyologist for lack of a better term. She has and continues to
make
powerful arguments for the idea that BtVS is a premier example of great
'literature' in the modern age. This woman is not stupid by any stretch
of the
imagination though some of her lectures (read: essays) do go a bit too
metaphysical. Contrawise there are some startling insights to
characterization
and plot development that, looked upon with these new eyes and a rested
mind
free from Buffy for a long time, make a hell of a lot of sense.
She never, or at least in any of the ones I've written, really goes in
depth
over the Dead-Tara factor but what the hey.
Now, some of the major twists were not done with all the care I would
have
liked but we can cite that under human error or 'It Looked Better On
Paper'.
Let me put this in perspective: Knowing what I know now and refreshed
as I am
now, and having read what I have read now, I can with much greater ease
see
how disrupted S4 was when Dr. Walsh's actress quit. On the other hand
while
the later events in S6 and S& were not, for example, fuzzy-wuzzy they
were not
disrupted; disruptive to you yes, but not disrupted. Ie. It was meant
that
way.
Careless PR, distracted Joss, and other factors probably didn't help
matters
but no, I got off the 'Beat Up The Plots Points I don't Like' thing a
ways
back.
Oh, right the second factor: A fanficcer who goes by the name of
Valyssia
tracked me down, we've chatted a bit. That sort of perked my interest
albeit
in an extremely minor way.
And you're making one critical mistake, perhaps it's the medium,
perhaps it's
your point-of-view, perhaps a lot of factors but a mistake it was
none-the-less: BtVS was not meant as escapist. If it had been, then
yes,
you're absolutly right- it failed spectacularly. If it wasn't
though...Ah,
there's the rub.
Next: A crummy world. Well, perhaps yours is, but IT isn't. That single
sentence smacks of nihilism: the devaluation of all values. Go read
some
Nietzsche and remind yourself why nihilism is so bloody dangerous. Oh
yes, and
depending on fiction to create value isn't exactly the safest thing in
the
world either.
Finally: The Comics. Don't have, havn't read em', well my friend got me
the
fist ...four or so...last summer. The issues twixt' the tounging
twosome? Fuck
it.
Make your own. Whedon is the bar, as his work, despite your protests,
still
has a stranglehold on your attention thusly you know what is required
to
supersede it.
Oh, yes, my opinion on 'Getting Off the Bus'.
Well, Howard would be lonely.
But whatever. I cannot create value for you, nor can you seek pure
value in a
'I am Happy because the Characters are Happy' manner. Either it is, or
it
isn't. From there comes action. Everything above is not opinion, it's
facts or
at least points of view not overburdened by pride or emotion or value
based on
personal, emotional investment...like I said: Facts.
If you're truly in need of a chuckle, I recently was convinced to
repost
Prisms on IKOLY.com. While poking around I came a cross a truly idiotic
challenge (I loathe challenges) and decided to ... play...with it. You
can
read it here:

Meh.
These days I'm downloading 'The Pretender' which is far, far better
than I
originally remember. Glee!
You can post this if you like.
I remain, as always,
