As for S4. Well, as far as I know the actress who played Dr. Walsh quit
halfway through the season. The original idea was that Walsh was to be
 the big
bad with Adam the 'Big Dumb Gun'. I mean, you have to admit that was
 pretty
pathetic. Also it would have gone a long way in terms of evil to have
 it the
over source being a human. Then there's the possibility of massive
 irony in
that it is often an accusation that man 'labels' things; attempts to
 box them
up in simple ideas that are easy to understand.

Genesis 2:20- And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the
 air,
and to every beast of the field; 

Riley says as much in Buffy's dream in 'Relentless': We're busy naming
things.
(No, I'm not that smart, it was pointed out to me in that book)

What greater irony it would have been to have this grand namer, this
 massive
tower of pride, this festering pile of Holier Than Thou'isms, this
 great
labeler and would-be definer of all things demonic being a woman?

Though that would have gone a long way into the whole mythology of
 Lilith
wouldn't it have?

Anyhoo, that actress bailed and the writers had to scramble. So did
 Seth
Green. Tara was a fluke. And seen in that perspective W/T'ers should be
 damn
grateful for what they got at all.
