A Statement on the 'Shipper War' and an Introduction

night, but the board ate my post. If it shows up please ignore.)
  
This is Valyssia. You can buy that or not. It really doesn't matter so
much to me. Actually, you can say, "Who the heck is Valyssia?" too if
you like. But I doubt you will. 

Howard might be kind enough to verify my identity, but then he's a
pretty goofy old man, so?

*Valyssia winks and pokes Mad Hamlet in the ribs, then leans over to
tickle Howard.*  
  
So here's the thing: I don't get it.  
  
Now lemme explain.  

Fan fiction the primary vehicle by which we express and enjoy whatever
`ship' we subscribe to. It is a wish made manifest through language.

When I got into this gig (writing fan fiction) I didn't do it because
I had some delusion that I might have some effect canon. I knew every
syllable of every word I wrote would not be canon. It would never come
close to canon. I resigned myself to not giving a crap who `Little
Miss Tightly Wound' would end up screwing in canon. The subject is
utterly meaningless to me. I could care less who `wins' the shipper war. 

Honestly, whoever she screws seems to end up leaving in a huff or
getting barbequed, so I kinda hope it's not Willow. I like the
character. Though, could she be more of a spaz? I hate the way they've
been writing her. It's like the girl doesn't have enough sense left to
find her way out of a wet paper bag now. But I digress?

Why I do what I do is simple. I am not a shipper. I will maintain that
until the day I leave the fandom. I write the pairing I write because
the characters are marvelous together. They play off of each other
wonderfully. No other ship has it so good.  
  
Fuffy: one of the characters has to have a full frontal lobotomy to
make Fuffy work.  
  
Spuffy: see fuffy then watch `Something Blue.'
  
Bander: the character would be interesting paired, but Xander would
have the live expectancy of a gnat in a cloud of DDT if he were
screwing Buffy. Realistically written the first `Big Bad' to come
along would pull his wings off. 
 
Bangel: the curse. Though with the Angel: After the Fall Series this
is looking a lot less like an issue. Fact is: both series are cash
cows for Mr. Whedon. He will not kill one cow to feed the other. It
all kinda the sense that's `not' from purely a business perspective.
As to the character's interactions: they were tired at the beginning
of season two, full on mindless romantic dribble designed to suck the
brains of teenage girls. (probably why the ship is so rabid) Buffy/
Angel really didn't get good until Angelus. When Angelus was put down
and came back they went back to being tired. Plus, you have the whole
charming pedophilia vibe from the Whistler stuff at the end of season
two. That I'll never get over. Buffy walking out of school sucking on
the lollipop, looking like a school girl while the creepy old guy
macks on her. No thanks. 

Buffy/ Satsu: (smush as you like) This is the only `ship' I can get on
board with. The reasons are pretty simple. One: if Satsu died or left
in a huff tomorrow would we really care? Two: none of the current
shippers win. No one can say `we're the best,' `we were right,' or
anything else equally trite.  
  
And that's enough of that? Back to the fic.
 
I aspire to do nothing more than entertain with my writing. I am
simply providing a service for those who read. I know that nothing I
write will ever be justified in canon unless I myself blatantly tie
the plot to canon. It wouldn't be even if Joss took a hair and said,
"Buffy, Willow you two are a couple. Now go and act coupley," all of a
sudden on a whim. I can aspire to write storylines that are more
entertaining than canon. But that is the best I can hope for and
honestly the greatest compliment I've ever been paid.  
  
*Valyssia walks away shaking her head.*

I still don't get it.
