So the ep is good news for you, because clearly B/S will win in the end.
All he has to do is become nice, lovable William.
Excuse me, what lovable William is that? I read an interview with James Marsters recently(TV Zone; Villain's Special), where he stated plainly that he thought William was a pretty unpleasant person even before he became a vampire!
The only time I recall seeing human William was the flashback in 'Fool For Love', when he was a total dweeb, and not a nice one at that!
Which I suppose would be more like a B/W relationship (some of the B/S
crowd have even stolen our initials to use for Buffy/William), but since
it would just make all this Spuffy stuff a-okay, I never want to see SMG
and JM kiss again, no matter how his character may change
In the interview, James also talked about his take on Spike, and he said that, even though he can't hurt anyone, he's still evil. He compared Spike to Malcolm McDowell in 'A Clockwork Orange', who played a thrill-rapist who was 'rehabilitated' through behavior modification, then called 'normal'. But you could still see in his eyes that he was evil, that he still wanted to commit the terrible crimes that got him off. He just wasn't physically able to.
Spike is evil. His every action is governed by self-interest. Why'd he help Buffy save the world from Angelus? Because he wanted to keep the 'Happy Meals with legs' around. Why'd he side with Adam? Because Adam promised to remove the chip. Why'd he turn on Adam? Because Adam reneged. Why'd he take care of Dawn last season? To gain leverage to get into Buffy's pants. Why does he continue to taunt Buffy about her being 'wrong'? Because it makes her more malleable.
Buffy, however, is finally taking control of her life, and taking said life away from Spike's control. She's taking a good first step in reclaiming herself. The next step, hopefully, will lead back to her friends and family, and hopefully find out what's 'wrong' with her. Spike, however, is going to make that difficult. He wants Buffy, and doesn't care who gets hurt in the process, Buffy included. Remember, his idea of love involves torture and beating (as he threatened to do with Dru in 'Lover's Walk').
The way I see it, Spike is the closest thing we have to a Big Bad this season. And Buffy is finally fighting back.

"Once, years ago, I saved the life of a wise old priest.
Grateful, he made a gift to me of these few precious words:
If you find yourself on a cliffside, trapped,
with a hungry tiger waiting above
and a hungry tiger waiting below,
and by chance you spy a single strawberry
growing from the cliffside...
pluck the strawberry...
and bite into it...
and taste it."
