Since it hasn't come up yet, I thought I'd throw in my own 2 cents about
this.
I don't really know WHERE I caught this little tidbit, but from what I
remember, the reason Elizabeth came up in the first place, is because it was
initially meant to be Buffy's first name.
Problem is, that after the her birth, Joyce was still sorta out of it from
the painkillers and when asked what name the Girl should get, she mumbled
something that the nurse interpreted as 'Buffy', and put that onto the birth
certificate. And once put on that, it's hard to change.
And ever since, she has officially been Buffy Anne Summers.

If that's canon, or something a fan made up, I can't say for sure, since
I've heard about this years ago, but it might give you something to further
investigate on :-)
