I was thinking about that scene for a while now myself. I thought that was
Spike's real plan; to love Buffy, in order to kill her.
Another scene from seasons past ran through my head earlier this season. In
"Amends", when Angel was preparing to die at sunrise, Buffy challenged his
idea of being strong; "Strong is fighting! It's hard, and it's painful, and
it's every day." Shades of what she later told Dawn at the end of "The
Gift", huh? I guess that's what's been aggrivating me about this season;
Buffy hasn't been fighting, just letting events drag her along from day to
day. Hopefully she'll remember her own words in the future.
Totally unrelated theory regarding Monday's episode of Angel ahead!

Okay, so Holst took Connor and ran into the portal opened up by that
time-traveling demon, right? My prediction(and I haven't read any spoilers
for future eps) is that the next time we see Connor he'll be an adult(time
travel, y'know), and having been raised by Holst, will recognize Angel as his
enemy. Leading to that whole father vs. son prophecy thing. So Connor will
be next season's major villain.

"Once, years ago, I saved the life of a wise old priest.
Grateful, he made a gift to me of these few precious words:
If you find yourself on a cliffside, trapped,
with a hungry tiger waiting above
and a hungry tiger waiting below,
and by chance you spy a single strawberry
growing from the cliffside...
pluck the strawberry...
and bite into it...
and taste it."
