I hear what you're saying, but sorry, ME dropped the ball on Spike &
Dawn. When was the last time Dawn saw Spike? Older & Far Away. How
many lines did they exchange? My memory is ZERO, but I'm willing to
concede there might have been 1. Oh, wait, there was Hell's Bells --
in which their conversation had nothing to do with Spike as Dawn's pal
and only to do with Dawn as the member of the wedding party who could
relay news back to Buffy. Before Older, I can't recall a single scene
between Dawn & Spike post-Smashed -- and I think that's being generous.
Heck, even the more clear-thinking Spuffys and Redemptionistas realised
they kinda needed to drop the Dawn element from their arguments after a
while because it just wasn't happening.

So, yeah, in THEORY, loss of Spike is yet another loss, but unlike the
Dawn-Riley sitch wherein Dawn's hurt made sense because Riley had been
gone from the show, the Dawn-Spike thing felt forced because Spike has
been here the whole damn time [sigh] yet you'd be hard pressed to build
a case from recent eps that the two were pals. Frankly, it made sense
to me that Spike was never around with Dawn (he's got Buffy, he doesn't
need to do the White Knight routine anymore) and while on the one hand
I think DeKnight (ME) took the prudent route by acting as if they'd
been buds all season long, on the other hand it rang false. If nothing
else, it doesn't make a lot of sense for Dawn to whine about Buffy
neglecting her and never being around while not lobbing the same
criticism at Spike.
