Man O Man, this is SOOO glaring when you watch the eps in sequence and
in one sitting. It's so bad that I'm tempted to believe that ASH's
desire to depart was a sudden thing, even though I know it wasn't.
::sigh:: ME coulda and shoulda done so much better by Giles.

speaking of Flooded....

I made that smartass comment about the M'Fashnik demon and Giles
shooting down Will's suggestion to do a locator spell, but it's
interesting to note the story structure of Flooded in light of later
events. When the Scoobs determined which demon it was that had robbed
the bank, Giles was rather calm about it. He'd heard of the demon,
knew of its MO, Buffy could take it out, no big whup. What he was
REALLY concerned about was who was controlling the demon. Who had that
sort of power? Indeed, as soon as he asked this (end of Act II), we
cut immediately to our very first visitation with the trio.

Thus, determining who summoned M'Fashnik should have been of highest
priority. At least that's what the script suggests. Moreover, in Act
IV after M'Fashnik had come into Buffy's home, assaulted Giles,
attempted to assault Dawn, and wreaked much mayhem, Buffy reiterated
that they needed to know who summoned the demon. It was at that point
that Willow suggested the locator spell, Giles shot her a look, and
then...nothing. The matter is dropped. (I'll have to think on this a
little more, but I think that started the season-long pattern of Buffy
& the Scoobs only half-completing their missions-of-the week.)

I've been sore and snarking about that incident all season, but I'm
convinced now more than ever that Espenson & Petrie were suggesting
that Giles fucked up in a big way. As Willow sometimes casts spells
when she shouldn't because she's coming from a place of too much
emotion and too little rationality, Giles vetoed the rational course of
action because he was pissed at Willow. Tsk, tsk, Watcherman!
