CArol;
You've hit on what's been depressing me for the last two weeks. I
was what now would be called a freak in school. Called a dyke when I
didn't know what it meant. Dating a "puppy dog" type guy to fit in.
I call him a "puppy dog" because I could control the relationship and
he'd never take it too far as long as I said "no." He was safe.
I was depressed when Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher broke up: I
wanted a public gay relationship to work.
I become highly devoted to BTVS at "Hush" and the energy between
Willow and Tara began to shine. I found hope and a sense of wonder
over the developing relationship and how "normal" and "casual" it was
treated in the series. Willow and Tara getting up and going about
morning stuff, sleeping in the same bed, snuggles. All of it was so
wonderful.
Then season 6 hit. Who the hell whacked ME over their collective
head? Where are the pods and what have they done with the real
characters? For promises of this season being about "growing up" I
haven't seen a lot of that. I've seen everyone acting like spoiled
kids and running from responsibilities. Magick is a drug? Please!
Now what? Willow is stripped of her powers, Tara is dead, Willow
killed brutually and tried to kill her friends and the entire world?
Please - didn't we do the redemption thing with Angel, already?
Spike with a soul? Bored now!
We can never get our Willow back just like our own innocence is
gone. That's not a cause to rejoice and anything to look forward to
next season - it's something to be mourned. Willow was the spirit of
the group, what does this season say about the writers? They screwed
us over and played with our emotions and possibly even our loyalty.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Oz return and "save" Willow from her
grief.
Will Buffy be close to Willow now? No, how could you forget your
best friend sending zombies after you and kicking your ass? Could
you forget your best friend thrashing the daylights out of Giles and
trying to kill the world? Not likely.
No, Buffy has a new focus - Dawn.
Can Willow face Giles, Anya and Xander after that? They'll forgive
her and tell her it was the black magick and her grief over losing
Tara but it'll always be there. And she'll always feel guilt over
it.
Can we go back to what we were in high school or early college?
Capture that innocence and sense of wonder? No and if the writers
try to hand that to us, they are out of touch with humans. Can
Willow go back to being "research girl" now? No, you can't go back.
ack, enough ranting for now.
Thank you, Carol, you helped focus my own depression. If you want to
talk - email me.
