No spoilers here, just to reply to one line.

Myself, I'm really surprised they would think that anyway. Anyone who
started watching before Season 5 already had a character to identify
with, and very few would have switched from their previous fave to
Dawnie.

For the most part, it was always men--Xander, women--Willow or Buffy
(basically depending on whether you felt left out or stressed out) and
some Joyce. And a few guys who think they're Spike (dream on, dudes).

All I know is B/X fandom would never have gone for so long on so little
if 90% of the male viewers weren't suffering his rejections with him.
