Something that nobody seems to have considered is that Spike is a 
vampire - you can fill him full of bullets and he barely notices, you 
can drop a building on him and he gets better. Surely he could have 
dug the chip out with a spoon and had nothing but a headache for a 
few days.

Just a thought.
