Well, my objections to Riley are somewhat shallower than my objections
to Spuffy, but yes, Sarah and Marc certainly lacked chemistry. Did you
know that Christian Kane (Lindsey McDonald) auditioned for Riley? Would
that they would have cast him...

As to why they can't keep Buffy single, I think they think that since
B/A was such a big smash, there's a certain part of the audience that
demands a romance of some sort. Lord knows Marti Noxon isn't going to
keep Buffy celibate, not Ms. Soap Opera Tortured Romance "Pains and
Chains Gal" (her nickname for herself). But, yeah, there's a lot to be
said for Season 1: less relationships, more stories. (And okay, a LOT
of B/W cuteness, but that's just our subtexty little minds at work...)

As for "better no one than the wrong one", well maybe that was the point
of Spuffy, to make Buffy learn that lesson. Maybe Spike will return in
Season 7, having learned and grown, and ready to be a better
boyfriend--and Buffy will STILL show him the door, because she knows
better than to repeat that mistake. Maybe ME won't live down to my
worst expectations and close the series on a Spuffy smoochfest.

Maybe I'll win the lottery tomorrow, too...
