Intriguing notion, my friend. I thought that the Master was responsible for
sealing himself in the cave, trying to open the Hellmouth himself. Perhaps
Mayor Wilkins saw him as competition and had him dealt with.

There's a cool comic trade paperback out by Dark Horse Comics called 'Tales
of the Slayer'. Eight stories about past and future slayers, written by Joss
and some of his staff writers(and one written by Amber Benson). One story,
written by Doug Petrie I think, involved a Slayer's last battle, against a
Native American vampire who killed her Watcher in 1870's California. The
final scene involved a local landowner telling a prospective buyer about the
history of the area. The buyer announces his plans to found a city on this
land, and the owner asks what he plans to name the city. The buyer turns
around, revealing himself to be Richard Wilkins, and says, "Something cheery,
like Happydale, or Sunny Acres. What do you think?"

Very cool collection of stories. My favorites were a Dark Ages piece written
by Joss, and one set in Nazi Germany, written by Rebecca Rand-Kirshner.
Check it out, you'll be glad you did.
