Re: RE: OT Fics?/Threesomes

First, let me say again that there won't be any poll or anything else
about banning threesomes. OT fics are a part of this list--that a
decision Rod and Kimber made ages ago. The concept is to allow authors
to spread their wings while still staying true to B/W. The fact that an
occasional qualm going around led me to appeal for a little tighter B/W
focus does NOT mean that I ever considered imposing an embargo, or
anything like that.

On RW's idea, what amuses me is that it's so close to Angelina's
"Whatever You Say", except that in that fic, Tara WAS just a cover story
(just like Riley) and was mighty embarassed and angry to find that out.
The idea of doing that story seriously is interesting, but RW makes a
good point that an established B/W relationship would be hard to bring a
stranger into--hence the tendency to start with W/T and then add Buffy.

Which as noted, rankles those who don't like to see the focus of this
list subordinated to a canon 'ship. I'm sure some Spike-adoring FF.net
author has written a Buffy/Spike/Willow, where Will is merely the latest
addition to Cheekbones's harem. **Shudders at the thought** And that's
just another case of how canon 'ships would tend to dominate [gratuitous
self-romanticizing] we poor brave few here in UC-land [/gratuitous
self-romanticizing]. If you're not fond of B/S or W/T on show, you
probably won't enjoy its intrusion into your fanfic sanctuary.
Understandable.

But to make the issue more complex, we do have large numbers of femslash
fans who were drawn in by W/T and are now branching out into UC
'shippage, and I certainly don't want to be unduly harsh to W/T
(especially since Joss, alas, already did a pretty fair job of that),
given that.

BTW, along these lines, a massive retroactive shoutout to Red for
"Summer of Love", which managed to pull off a Buffy/Willow/Angel
threesome fic where the focus was on B/W rather than the canon pairing,
and yet didn't disrespect the weight the canon gives to B/A. Nicely
balanced, I thought.

Anyway, RW's comments about the difficulty of balancing a B/W/T fic make
me appreciate more the predominance of "prophetic-bond" B/W/Ts, as noted
by Kirayoshi in his essay. (Thanks for reprinting that, btw, Jim).

'kay, that's as far as my rambling thoughts take me for today. Shutting
up now and letting people fic away.
